SD-WAN Single IP Failover for Maximum Network Uptime

Same IP Failover floats one public IP across WAN links so sessions survive an outage. How it works, what it means for VoIP, VPN, SaaS, and transactions, and what implementing it actually takes.

Network uptime has never been more critical. With remote workers depending entirely on VPN and cloud connectivity, even brief outages have immediate, measurable impacts on productivity.

SD-WAN Single IP Failover: how it works

SD-WAN with Single IP (Same IP) Failover is a technology that enables seamless switchover between internet service providers when one experiences an outage - without dropping active sessions.

In a traditional multi-WAN setup, each internet connection has its own IP address. When the primary connection fails, traffic switches to the backup connection, but with a different IP address. This IP change causes active sessions to drop - VPN tunnels disconnect, VoIP calls drop, web application sessions terminate. Users experience an outage even though backup connectivity is technically available.

With Same IP Failover, the router maintains a single public IP address that floats between WAN connections. When the primary connection fails, the IP address moves to the backup connection. Active sessions continue uninterrupted because the IP address hasn't changed. VPN tunnels stay up, calls continue, application sessions persist.

Business impact

The business impact of Same IP Failover is significant:

For businesses relying on VoIP: Calls don't drop during WAN failover events. Customer service operations continue uninterrupted.

For businesses using SD-WAN or VPN: Remote workers maintain connectivity to corporate resources without having to reconnect.

For businesses with cloud-hosted applications: Active user sessions in SaaS applications continue without interruption.

For businesses processing transactions: In-progress transactions complete successfully rather than failing due to connection drops.

Implementing Same IP Failover with SD-WAN

Implementing Same IP Failover requires an SD-WAN solution that supports IP anchoring or public IP mobility across WAN links. Not all SD-WAN products support this capability equally well - it's an important requirement to evaluate when selecting an SD-WAN solution.

Capcon Networks' Managed Connectivity service includes Same IP Failover as a standard feature. We configure dual-carrier connectivity at each customer location with automatic failover that maintains session continuity. For customers with existing SD-WAN infrastructure, we can work with the existing platform to enable Same IP Failover capabilities.

The result is a network that delivers on the promise of 100% uptime - not just connectivity, but uninterrupted connectivity that supports the way modern businesses operate.
